Lauren Laverne presents highlights of the spectacular events launching Liverpool's year as the European Capital of Culture.
Awarded the title in 2004, the city kicks off its year as European Capital of Culture with two nights of amazing spectacle, featuring musicians, singers, dancers, aerial acrobats and special effects.
Friday 11 January sees a massive open air extravaganza outside St George's Hall drawing on performers and artists associated with Liverpool, from Ringo Starr to indie band the Wombats as well as an aerial ballet and massed choirs. Saturday's events come from the city's new Liverpool Echo Arena and feature Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in collaboration Dave Stewart, No Fakin DJs , The Bunnymen, Ian Brodie, The Farm, Riuven and Pete Wylie.
The programme also takes a look at what it means to be awarded Capital of Culture status and speaks to those involved in putting the whole year's series of events together. [S]
